Cortec VpCI® CorrVerter® Rust Primer

Product Description

CorrVerter® is a fast drying, water-based one coat system (primer) that converts rusted surfaces to a hydrophobic passive layer and prevents further rusting thru the unique formulation of chelating agents and PVC resins. CorrVerter does not contain tannic or phosphoric acids, provides long-term corrosion protection for poorly prepared substrates, and can be topcoated with solvent-based and water-based paints with no bleeding. 


CorrVerter® water-based primer recommended for application to rusty or poorly prepared steel surfaces where further corrosion protection is required and good surface preparation is difficult to achieve. CorrVerter is formulated to penetrate rust, eliminate rust, penetrate to the bare metal, and stop further rusting and is recommended for use on all ferrous metal surfaces as a rust converter/paint primer.


The product can be used in situations where proper cleaning or sandblasting is difficult. For outdoor top coat applications VpCI-386, VpCI-387 or VpCI-396 can be utilized. The combination of CorrVerter and VpCI-396 provides the best immersion coating for submersion in water, salt water, hydro carbons and high salinity water.

Application Instructions

It is recommended that any loose rust be removed with a wire brush and the rusty steel surface washed with high-pressure water to remove excess salt contamination before applying the product. Brush, roll, or spray CorrVerter with no surface show-through at 3-5 mils (75-125 microns) wet film thickness. Brush application is preferred to ensure penetration into the rust. The coating can be applied to dry or damp surfaces. The converter can be used as is or may be diluted up to 10% with water. For badly corroded surfaces, a second coat of CorrVerter should be applied within 20-30 minutes to ensure maximum protection. Allow to air dry 12-24 hours before applying topcoat or putting the coated components into the environment.

Cortec VpCI®-372

Description

VpCI®-372 is a modified water-base acrylic, corrosion inhibiting fast drying, peelable-strippable coating that provides protection in sheltered applications. Provides multi-metal protection in two ways: atmospheric corrosion and as a physical barrier to protect against nicks, abrasion, scratches, etc. Excellent UV resistance. VpCI®-372 is used as a dry film, temporary coating for parts and equipment. The coating is stripped or peeled away prior to equipment use, and will not leave a residue. Can be color tinted.

Cortec VpCI®-373

Product Description 

VpCI®-373 is a water-based wash primer used for bonding other primers and coatings such as VpCI-386, to a variety of metal substrates. VpCI-373 is applied at an extremely thin thickness of 0.5-1.0 mil (12.5-25 microns) DFT. When used in conjunction with topcoats, this product can extend protection significantly.

Cortec VpCI®-387 Water Based Acrylic Hi-Build Topcoat

Product Description

VpCI®-387 Water Based Acrylic Hi-Build Topcoat is a fast drying, high build water-based acrylic one coat system (topcoat) that can be applied DTM (Direct to Metal) and provides protection in harsh, outdoor, unsheltered applications. The complex mixture of non-toxic, organic inhibitors offers protection that competes with most paints and zinc-rich primers. Provides multi-metal protection. Excellent UV resistance. Can be tinted to match colors.


Surface Preparation

Substrate should be free of grease, oil, dirt, fingerprints, drawing compounds, rust inhibitors, or any other surface contamination that could affect adhesion. For production line applications, use VpCI®-440 or similar phosphatizing pre-treatment. For structural steel applications, Cortec® recommends a minimum of a NACE #3/ SSPC-SP6 commercial.


A wash primer such as VpCI®-373 green applied at 0.5-1.0 mils (12.5-25 microns) is recommended before applying the VpCI®-387 to aluminum, galvanized or plated substrates. Other recommended primers include VpCI®-375, 395 and 396

depending on coating requirements.


Note: Make sure dew point is more than 5°F (2°C) less than air temperature for application. Power agitate to a uniform consistency using a “squirrel cage” type mixer, hand-held drill mixer, or other equivalent method. VpCI®-387 can be applied by spray, roll, brush, or dip.

Cortec VpCI®-391 Water Based Temporary Coating

Product Description

VpCI®-391 is a fast drying, water-based temporary coating that provides medium to long-term indoor and outdoor protection in harsh, outdoor, unsheltered applications. Provides multimetal protection. Excellent UV resistance. Can be matched to some custom colors. Provides a non-tacky film. Use of VpCI®-391 on weld joints does not negatively impact weld geometry or mechanical properties of the weld. It can be used to keep surfaces corrosion-free prior to welding.

Cortec VpCI®-396

Product  Description: 

VpCI®-396 is a high solids aromatic moisture cure urethane. VpCI-396 is a direct to metal primer for multimetal protection. VpCI-396 should be top coated with an aliphatic urethane top coat for best results. In addition to the outstanding barrier protection, VpCI-396 also contains Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors for additional protection. 


VpCI®-396 is suitable for immersed structures when applied over CorrVerter® for marginally prepared surfaces; such as ballast tanks, storage tanks, or holding tanks containing hydrocarbons to high salinity solutions. VpCI-396 forms a very hard, but flexible coating that cures in the presence of moisture in the air. For best results the curing conditions required are a relative humidity between 20% and 80% with temperatures above 32°F and below 120°F.
