Water based Rust Converter

Cortec CorrVerter®

Description

CorrVerter® is a fast drying, water-based one coat system (primer) that converts rusted surfaces to a hydrophobic passive layer and prevents further rusting thru the unique formulation of chelating agents and PVC resins. CorrVerter does not contain tannic or phosphoric acids, provides long-term corrosion protection for poorly prepared substrates, and can be topcoated with solvent-based and water-based paints with no bleeding.

CorrVerter® recommended for application to rusty or poorly prepared steel surfaces where further corrosion protection is required and good surface preparation is difficult to achieve. CorrVerter is formulated to penetrate rust, eliminate rust, penetrate to the bare metal, and stop further rusting. CorrVerter is recommended for use on all ferrous metal surfaces as a rust converter/paint primer. The product can be used in situations where proper cleaning or sandblasting is difficult.

CorrVerter® offers engineers, owners, contractors, DOT’s, and other government agencies a convenient, low-labor option when performing repairs on heavily corroded rebar and other metal surfaces. For outdoor applications VpCI-386, VpCI-387 or VpCI-396 can be utilized. The combination of CorrVerter and VpCI-396 provides the best immersion coating for submersion in water, salt water, hydro carbons and high salinity water.

Advantages

CorrVerter converts rust quickly and can be applied under varying  weather conditions •

Provides 1000+ hours of corrosion protection with 3-mil (75 microns) application under salt spray conditions (ASTM B 117) • • Coated rebar has equal or better bond strength to concrete •

Can be topcoated with water- and solvent-based topcoats (tannic or phosphoric acid-based coatings, which can only be topcoated with solvent-based topcoats) • Better protection against re-rusting than tannic or phosphoric acid-based converters • Water-based •Very low VOC  • Environmentally friendly, non-toxic • Non-flammable, non-combustible • Works in HCl, H2S, SO2, & CO2 vapor environments

Applications

Industrial maintenance • General metal • Marine • marine equipment • Holding tanks • storage tanks • Outdoor storage • aircraft • elevators • vehicles • pumps • cargo holds and more

Application Instructions

It is recommended that any loose rust be removed with a wire brush and the rusty steel surface washed with high-pressure water to remove excess salt contamination before applying the product. Brush, roll, or spray CorrVerter with no surface show-through at 3-5 mils (75-125 microns) wet film thickness. Brush application is preferred to ensure penetration into the rust. The coating can be applied to dry or damp surfaces. The converter can be used as is or may be diluted up to 10% with water. For badly corroded surfaces, a second coat of CorrVerter should be applied within 20-30 minutes to ensure maximum protection. Allow to air dry 12-24 hours before applying topcoat or putting the coated components into the environment.

CorrVerter is available in the following sizes: 1 gallon and 5 gallon plastic pails

Keep product from freezing. The shelf life of the coating is one year.

VpCI®-422

Description

VpCI®-422 effectively removes rust and tarnish from steel, iron, copper, and brass. VpCI®-422  is completely organic, removes corrosion from metal and does not require special disposal for typical use and is more operator friendly than traditional rust removers. VpCI®-422G is a modification of VpCI®-422, which is recommended for galvanized steel.

Unlike conventional rust removers, which can be extremely dangerous to use, handle, and store; VpCI®-422 is non-flammable and biodegradable. It can be used in labor-intensive areas such as continuous assembly and packaging lines minimizing effects on production efficiency.

Removing corrosion from metal is easy; just apply VpCI®-422 and rinse with water. It will not adversely affect most paints, plastics, wood, textiles, ceramics, or rubber when used as recommended.  It is especially helpful for outdoor and marine applications where chemical waste disposal can be a problem. In rare situations, waste treatment may be required if large quantities of pollutants are accumulated during cleaning.

Advantages

• Removes rust and corrosion from ferrous and non-ferrous metals • Prevents flash rusting • Completely organic and readily biodegradable • Non-polluting and environmentally acceptable (Check with local authorities for specific disposal guidelines) • Loosens rust-frozen parts • No adverse effects on most paints, plastics, wood, textiles, ceramics, and rubbers • Non-flammable formulation and mild odor, ideal for in-plant use • NSF (A3) Registered. Acceptable for use as an acid cleaner in and around food processing areas for indirect food contact • Passes ASTM F-519-05 “Mechanical Hydrogen Embrittlement Evaluation of Plating/Coating  Processes and Service Environments”

Applications

• In-process rust removal for parts and metal stock • Interior and exterior surfaces of tanks and vessels • Outdoor machinery and equipment • Trucks, cars, and other vehicles • Automotive, marine, and equipment • Fences, railings, and walls • Tools, locks, and rust-frozen parts

Packaging and Storage

VpCI®-422G are available in 5 gallon (19 liter), 55 gallon (208 liter) drums, totes, and bulk.

VpCI®-423

Description

VpCI®-423 is a water-based gel that effectively removes rust and oxides from steel, iron, brass, and copper. When used as recommended, VpCI®-423 will not adversely affect most paints, plastics, wood, textiles, ceramics, or rubber. VpCI®-423 is formulated to cling on vertical and overhead surfaces for rust and oxide removal in difficult-to-reach spaces. VpCI®-423 contains flash corrosion inhibitors to prevent flash corrosion during the rust and oxide removal process.

After rust removal, rinse the area thoroughly with water, then use Cortec® VpCI®-414 or similar alkaline cleaners to ensure a clean, corrosion free metal surface. VpCI®-423 is NSF (A3) registered, acceptable for use for indirect food contact. It contains 91% USDA certified biobased content and qualifies for Mandatory Federal Purchasing in the USDA BioPreferred®

Bullfrog 94236

Description

Bullfrog Rust Remover with Rust Blocker (94236)  -  Industrial Version VpCI-423.

Finally, a Rust Remover that is safe to use and safe for the environment and it really works! For years, the normal method of removing rust has been harmful to both the user and the environment. Conventional rust removers can damage a metal surface as well as the rust returning almost as quickly as it was removed allowing the corrosion and rust build up to continue. Not anymore.

Bullfrog Rust Remover gel with VpCI® rust protection removes rust safely from metals and protects it from flash rusting. The patented VpCI®s (Vapor Phase Corrosion Inhibitor) bond electrochemically with the metal surface to seal out air and moisture that quickly cause new rust. This is the same technology that has been protecting military and industrial equipment for years.

How it works

Cortec VpCI®s bond with metal surfaces to form a protective 'Molecular VpCI Umbrella' sealing out air and moisture that cause rust and corrosion.

Advantages

• Environmentally Safe—Organic • Biodegradable • Non-toxic—Non-flammable • No VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) • Doesn’t harm existing paint or damage metal surfaces.

Applications

• Marine Equipment • Machinery & Equipment • Hand & Power Tools • Rusted frozen parts • Fences & Railings • Metal Fixtures • Trucks, Cars, Bikes • Metal Furniture • Lawn & Garden Equipment

How to Use

To use the Bullfrog Rust Remover gel, just apply to metal surface and let the gel do the work. The gel consistency of Bull Frog Rust Remover allows it to stick to slightly angled or irregular surfaces. Wait 15 minutes for lightly rusted surfaces or up to 2 hours for more heavily rusted surfaces. After de-rusting is complete just rinse with water. Repeat process if rust remains. Provides flash rust protection.
